John-Abbott College - Aboriginal Resource Centre celebrates 25th anniversary

Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue – April 15, 2015 – On Wednesday, April 29, John Abbott College will be the site of a major landmark in the 44 year history of the school. The Aboriginal Student Resource Centre, opened in 1990, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of dedicated service and support for students from First Nations and Inuit communities on campus.

The Buffalo Hat Singers will open the celebration at 11:30 in the Agora. Traditional dances, Inuit throat singing, and speakers including JAC alumna and actress Devery Jacobs are just a sampling of what will be on hand for visitors.
The Centre is a place for students to work, study, talk, get tutoring and counseling, as well as maintain their identity as Aboriginal people within the College community. They know that they can count on two fulltime dedicated professionals.

As access to post-secondary education improves for communities across the country, the College has seen a marked increase in the number of enrolments among both Inuit and First Nations with over 100 students registered with the Centre this year, twenty more students that last year. Nations represented in the Centre since opening include Inuit, Mohawk, Cree, Algonquin, Mi’kmaq, Ojibway, Metis, and Atikamekw.
