Dawson College - Artists In Bloom

17 avril 2019 - Artists in Bloom is an annual event held at Dawson College through which the Blue Ring Society, the ambassador organization of Dawson students, raises funds for a charitable cause. Over the past 22 years, the event has raised around $140,000 for a variety of causes. This year all the funds raised will go towards the Dawson College First People’s Initiative and Youtheatre.

Youtheatre’s aim is to engage its audience through compelling theatre which provokes, questions, challenges and entertains. Our major area of focus is the creation, development and production of new works for young people by the finest Canadian artists and playwrights. Funding will benefit our new initiatives YouShare and YouCreate, which will give opportunities to artists from all walks of life to share skills, build relationships, collaborate, and, experiment, while also giving new tools and possibilities to younger teen artists. Building on a history of inclusiveness, Youtheatre looks forward to creating more bridges with underrepresented artists and audiences.

The Dawson First Peoples’ Initiative is a group of faculty, staff, and students working to explore ways of indigenizing our college. The main goals of the initiative are to ensure that Dawson is responding to the interests, experiences, goals, and concerns of Indigenous students. To bring Indigenous history, culture, knowledge, and issues to the forefront in all aspects of college life. The First Peoples’ Centre and Journeys Program host a retreat in the fall for our Indigenous students as part of our peer mentorship program. They partner incoming students with second year students and the retreat is the first chance for those students to really get to know one another, while participating in team building activities. Funding would greatly benefit the global initiatives as well as the specific projects the Centre undertake.

The event puts on display over two dozen talented student-artists in the Fine Arts, 3D Animation and Illustration departments who create new works of art before a live audience over a two-hour period, which are then auctioned off.

Artists in Bloom begins at 6 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Cafeteria (3C.1) with the artists bringing blank canvasses to life as guests mingle, eat and drink while the creative process unfolds before their eyes.

At 8 p.m., the gavel drops as The Beat 92.5 radio host Donna Saker starts the auction of the paintings. Advance tickets to the event are $15 for adults and $10 for students while at the door they are $20 for adults and $15 for students. Children 12 and under are free. Everyone is welcome. Tickets are available online or at the door.
